At OPS we developed a researched based framework to support our ākonga (learners). We call it an EPIC Environment.
It's more than just the physical environment - although that is part of it. It also includes the 'emotional environment' and and environment which is 'intellectually challenging'.
Consultation with our OPS whānau (Term 3 2023) has helped us update these concepts.
The images below give a simple summary of what each part of EPIC involves.
Each year we will continue to refine and add to our understanding of what it means to have EPIC Learning Environments.
Our staff indicated that the 'Emotional Environment' was an aspect of EPIC which they would benefit from focusing on in 2025.
In our January Professional Learning Days before school started for the year we focused as a staff on what we can do to build on the Emotional Environment for ākonga (learners) and whānau (families). We also spent time focusing on building on a great Emotional Environment for our staff.
We will contimue to build o this over the 2025 year.
Physical Environment has been a big focus for our staff for a number of years. We have used research to guide how learning environments are set up and used.

All of our learning focuses on creating and Intellectually challenging Environment.
We CARE and EPIC are interconnected and evident in all aspects of our school.
