Term 2 2023  Travelwise Team

Hi there, we are  Natalie, Sophie, Penny and Hazel. Together we make up the Travelwise Team for OPS. It is a fun student lead group with teacher support that works together to make the travel around our school safer for all. We work with Auckland transport and they support us with our ideas to make our school safer. Our team is currently working on the way we use the parking and crossings around our school.

The travelwise team recently created this video on the safety of our school stairs. Please enjoy our video.

 Walk Campaign 2023

For Week 3 and 4 the Travelwise team are encouraging people to park away from the school and walk. There are 2 amazing options the school has very close by. These are near the Trident off Selwyn street and the Gerrard Besson Road car park above Countdown. These are no more than 4 minutes walk from school. Please support this campaign to ease the safety issues and traffic congestion near our school. Let's work together as a community to make the school gate safer for all our tamariki. Below is a map to show the two options for parking using a little red car. Thank you for your support in making our school gate safer.

Reducing Our Carbon Output  - 2024

Has anyone noticed a little box in the school carpark lately? Here is a little explanation of what it is and why it is there.

Our school is monitoring our carbon output with the support of GNS Science, Sustainable Schools and Auckland City Council. The goal is to lower our carbon emissions output.

The box has been measuring the carbon emissions over the holidays and over the next couple of weeks it will monitor during term emissions. Our goal is to look at the data from the box and come up with ways to lower the emissions that we have.

Meadowbank School took part in this project in 2023 and made some significant changes to their carbon footprint. A group of children will work alongside me to make a plan after we have received the data. We are really looking forward to this project and are excited about all the ways we can make changes to make our environment healthier for everyone.

Here is a recent article about Meadowbank School  and another from National Radio

Funky Movement Festival - Drive it down campaign - 2024

We are excited to announce our Funky Movement Festival for Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 2. This campaign focuses on reducing the amount of carbon monoxide being released around our school at drop off and pick up times.

We understand that driving to school is easier, but we ask that you try to park and walk using the nearby car parks around the community (behind the Trident Tavern and Gerrard Beeson Car Park).

The 2 week festival is an important event to work together to bring down our carbon footprint. Throughout the two weeks we will be having special and exciting days for you to take part in if you choose.

On Wednesday the 26th June we are having a walk with your wacky or odd socks to school day.

Wednesday the 3rd July we are having to ride or walk your wacky hair to school day.

On the final day we are having to walk or ride your wacky clothes to school, as well as a warm treat for those who have participated in our active festival.

We look forward to everyone giving this a try and supporting the travelwise team to reduce our carbon footprint.
